·In most cases the people you
will be serving won’t speak English, your patience and
understanding will connect you better with the children as well as
adults. However, you will be helped by a Chinese, English speaking
co-volunteer who will be working with you all the time to
translate the conversations you will have during
your interactions.
·While serving people,
ask the NGO staff’s permission before taking any action over and
above your service role.
·Volunteers are expected
to adhere to the behavioral expectations and policies of the NGO
they are placed in which may be set out verbally or explained in a
volunteering handbook.
·Take care of your own
health and security during your service. For details on this
issue, see the Volunteer Disclaimer.
·Please write a short
summary about your experience at volunteering after finishing the
program and share it with us.
·Do let us know if you
feel you are unsuited to the volunteering role assigned to you at
the NGO we place you at.
·For any problem, apart
from legal disputes between you and the NGO you serve at, feel
free to communicate with us.
And finally, remember a
simple rule of etiquette you learned when you were younger: "Don't
discuss politics or religion in polite company." This is polite
company. We're here to help the communities we serve, not
communicate our world view to them, either religious or political.
While engaging in your volunteer project, please be respectful of
Chinese culture and avoid topics which are considered impolite to
discuss with acquaintances and new friends, such as politics or
religion.
