World Horticultural Expo Garden
The
Kunming World Horticultural Exposition Garden, the World Expo
Garden for short, is the site of the 1999 World Horticultural
Exposition. Located in the northeast suburb of Kunming it is about
4 KM (2.5 miles) from downtown Kunming. The Expo garden was the
legacy left after an event that presented landscaping and
gardening arts from all over the world.
With an area of
218 hectares, the World Expo Garden is a green park, 76.7% of the Expo
Garden is covered by vegetation. Various styles of classical gardening and
horticultural arts from different provinces, regions and municipalities in
China and 95 different countries around the world are showcased there. It
also features architecture from these places and latest gardening and
horticultural technologies.
Within the garden are five major halls: the International Hall, the
Chinese Hall, the Man and Nature Hall, the Science Hall and the Green
House. There are seven other theme gardens: the Tree Garden, the Bamboo
Garden, the Bonsai Garden, Medical Herb Garden, the Tea Garden, the
Vegetable and Fruit Garden and the Garden of Famous Flowers and Rare
Stones. The three outdoor exhibition areas are the Outdoor International
Exhibition Area, the Outdoor Chinese Exhibition Area and the Outdoor
Exhibition Area of Companies. There are more than two million trees and
flowers from more than 2551 species, of which 112 are rare and endangered
ones.
The
1999 Kunming World Horti-Expo Garden set eight Guinness records:
The
largest area of construction;
Finishing construction within the least amount of time;
Showcasing the most varieties of plants;
The greatest variety of bamboos;
The best horticultural and gardening craftsmanship;
The largest scale of connected greenhouses;
The transplanting of the largest cypress tree;
The best artificial bluff and stone carving.
The Kunming
World Horti-Expo Garden is the best preserved site of World Expos in
history. Boasted as the largest scale, with the most unique features, the
Kunming Expo Garden's greatest value is the presentation of unique
historical cultures and landscapes. It has become a precious legacy on a
world-class level, with unique characteristics from different countries
and regions, fine horticultural arts, high quality, unparallel beauty, and
sustainable values.
There are several buses to the Expo Garden from downtown Kunming City,
including numbers 10, 68, 69 and 71. Located in the Golden Temple Scenic
region, there are several other places interesting for sightseeing, among
them the Golden Temple and the Wild Animals Zoo.
