Home : Overseas Volunteer Programs

Impact Abroad offers free volunteer placements in Kunming, the cosmopolitan capital of Yunnan. We place volunteers in a number of areas including education, mostly English teaching, community development and environmental conservation.

For these programs we collaborate with many local NGOs that we have developed partnerships with over the years. The majority of our volunteers are placed with organizations serving disadvantaged groups such as ethnic minorities, migrant laborers, children and women. Our volunteers help provide informal education and vocational skills that disadvantaged children need to get jobs and make a better future for themselves. Meeting people from other countries can help foster in these children a curiosity about the world outside China. Moreover, volunteering for people from minority groups can be a culturally enriching experience for volunteers, as these groups are rich in their own traditional culture even though they have not been able to benefit from the economic development that has affected the rest of the nation. While volunteering at these NGOs, our volunteers will come face-to-face with the local community. As a result, they will have an excellent opportunity to learn about a new culture and practice Mandarin with native speakers if they are already familiar with Mandarin.

Programs for Underprivileged Children - Our partner non-profit organizations in Kunming serve children from severely disadvantaged backgrounds, including children of migrant laborers as well as disabled children. These children are taught basic English not only to develop their communication skills in English, but also to expand their employability skills in order to turn their lives around. Volunteer projects with these organizations would include teaching English to these children and assisting with various community outreach projects.

Programs in Environmental
Conservation China’s recent unbridled economic development has become a major stumbling block to its environmental conservation. That is why some of our partner organizations are engaged in sustainable development as well as protection of ecological resources in Yunnan. Fostering public awareness in order to preserve the local flora and fauna is at the heart of most of their programs. Volunteer activities with these organizations can help students learn in depth about this issue.

Programs in Culture Conservation – Several non-profits in Kunming and throughout Yunnan are trying their level best to conserve their cultural heritage that is at the risk of extinction. The aim of many such organizations is to promote research in the field of restoration and preservation of natural and cultural resources of Yunnan.

Community Development – In spite of China’s phenomenal economic development, Yunnan is largely an underdeveloped province of China, where poverty is pervasive. Non-profit organizations devoted to poverty alleviation and community service abound in Yunnan. Most of our partner organizations are involved in community service and development projects that aim at the capacity building and empowerment of children and women, who are mostly migrant laborers in Kunming. For instance, many of our partner NGOs have set up libraries for children from impoverished backgrounds. Many have organized after-school programs that take care of children of working parents assisting them with their homework’s and offering them free lessons in English, mathematics, music and painting in a bid to engage their attention constructively. Many of our partner organizations are engaged in training destitute women and giving them the necessary employable skills to change their lives for the better. For instance, many of the non-profit organizations, where we arrange for voluntary work for international student volunteers, teach women to make dresses and curtains with the aid of sewing machines.
